You probably don’t believe in the Holy Spirit.
Sure, you say the Creed every Sunday and if someone asked you’d say “well of course I believe in the Holy Spirit.”
But do you really?
I know I don’t. At least not as much as I should.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Do you really? Let’s see…
Do you ever read about the miracles that the saints performed and look at them in awe and think, “I could never do that”?
Then you don’t believe in the Holy Spirit.
In John 14:12, Jesus said that we would do all the things he did and even greater things. He says in Acts 1:8 that he will give us power… now the Greek word there is actually the same word we get “dynamite” from.
At Pentecost, Jesus gave us that dynamite power.
As someone who’s baptized in the name of the Trinity, you have been given that Holy Spirit, that same dynamite power.
The Holy Spirit gets kind of a bad rap nowadays. We focus a lot on the Father and the Son, but the Holy Spirit often gets left by the wayside.
Or when people do talk about Him, folks get all weird and worried about the charismatic movement.
But that same Holy Spirit is the one who converted 3,000 people just from Peter’s first sermon. That same Spirit gives sight to the blind. That same Spirit brought the dead to life.
The Apostles performed some pretty incredible things in those years after Pentecost.
The Acts of the Apostles is literally named for all the awesome stuff they did.
In the words of the Cowardly Lion, “What do they got that I ain’t got?”
You have everything you need
You have everything that the Apostles did.
By virtue of your common priesthood, you have been given the authority to raise the dead.
By virtue of your anointing, you have been given the power of the Holy Spirit.
By virtue of your Baptism, you have been given the authority to invoke the name of Jesus Christ.
He said that if we ask the Father anything in His name that it would be granted. Did Jesus lie? No.
We just don’t have the faith.
I said earlier that I don’t believe the Holy Spirit as much as I should. It’s true. I’ve seen Him work through me before in ways that have blown my mind, but I still have problems trusting in Him sometimes.
I struggle with the same sins, with the same weaknesses. There’s no way I can beat them myself, but I could easily with the Holy Spirit.
All I have to do is ask and participate with His Divine Power.
Sometimes I just don’t have the faith.
Which is dumb because faith is a gift—all I have to do is ask.
What about you?
What is it you’re struggling with? It doesn’t even need to be a sin.
Several people I know are afraid to smile at a stranger and show joy. Even more would rather sink through their shoes than tell people about their experiences with God.
Almost everyone (myself included) is fine with things as they are. We are content.
You were not born to be content. You were not baptized into a life of ease.
You have been called to go out into all the world and preach the Gospel.
If not, what’s holding you back? Fear? Or maybe a lack of faith?
You are called to be bold. Fearless.
A warrior poet (or warrior princess) for the Gospel.
Doesn’t sound like you? Why not?
You have everything you need.
So again I ask: do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
What do you think?
